I am an independent literacy consultant with considerable educational experience in Scotland. I began my career as a secondary English teacher, and spent several years as Head of Department in two separate schools before becoming a Depute Headteacher in a large secondary comprehensive. Seconded to Learning and Teaching Scotland (now Education Scotland), the national advisory body on the curriculum, I became an Education Manager during the development of the internationally acclaimed Curriculum for Excellence.
Recently I have worked with the Scottish Qualifications Authority as an adviser on the development of literacy tasks for the Scottish Survey of Literacy and Numeracy. I am the author of Many Stories, One Scotland, the Scottish Council for Archives’ National Strategy for Learning 2012-2015, and have been a regular contributor to TES Scotland, The Scottish Review and other publications. I am excited to be part of a small education team at Inanimate Alice, a beautiful digital novel and transmedia project for early teens.
I am also a regular speaker/presenter at home and abroad, on topics such as Digital Literacy, New Narratives for a New Age, and Transmedia and Education. I am a sports fan and former Scottish Masters 1500m champion. In decent weather, I would normally prefer to be running, cycling or hillwalking.
